These institutions prepare students for careers in technical fields such as engineering, computer-assisted drafting, and technology. Their emphasis is on professional training, with minimal course offerings and requirements in general studies or fields such as history and literature. Vocational Colleges
VocationalCollegs also concentrate on preparing students for specific careers, but they are structured more like Community Colleges. They usually offer training in one area, in programs that range from short certificate courses lasting only a few months to associate degrees that take two or more years to complete.
Art Schools
Students who are exceptionally gifted in the arts may consider studying at an Art School.
These schools focus almost exclusively on training students in the performing and visual arts. Some arts colleges grant undergraduate or masters degrees (BFA or MFA). They usually require auditions of the submission of portfolios of work for admission.

Students interested in preparing for careers as officers in the armed forces—the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines—may choose to study at a Military School. Private and state-funded military academies are structured like four-year colleges and have similar application procedures, while federal military schools may require the sponsorship of a member of Congress. These institutions offer courses and degrees in military science, but also in other fields, such as business, engineering, and technology.
Nursing Schools
Nursing Schools, which may be affiliated with hospitals or with universities, prepare students for careers in nursing, granting either a bachelor’s or R.N. (registered nurse) degree; some programs grant both.
