Study Abroad

If you are interested in living abroad during all or part of your studies, Study Abroad programs may be for you. Study Abroad opportunities come in a variety of forms:

Degree programs at foreign institutions

that admit American high school graduates. These are
programs that are primarily designed for local students,
but which also admit qualified individuals from other countries, including the U.S.

Many of these programs closely resemble American colleges and universities, but they may also differ in important ways. Outside of English-speaking countries, most university courses are not taught in English.
Students will usually be required to show fluency in the language of instruction before being accepted, although some programs combine language study with other courses.
These programs may also be structured differently; most universities outside the United States, for instance, don’t emphasize the liberal arts but are pre-professional in nature. Some degrees granted by foreign institutions may not be recognized in the U.S.

Students who are interested in studying overseas for an extended period should familiarize themselves with the visa requirements and procedures of the country they wish to visit. Also note that most federal aid programs are not available for students enrolled in universities abroad.

Degree programs designed for U.S. students at foreign institutions.

In addition to opening their regular programs to American students, a growing number of foreign schools offer specially designed schools or programs for U.S. high school graduates.

In these programs, the language of instruction is usually English, though students may also be required to study the local language. The courses are usually similar to those at U.S. institutions, and sometimes degrees are granted by American colleges or universities. These programs offer a balance between immersion in another culture and the structure and support provided by American colleges.

Semester or year abroad programs.

Many U.S. schools offer the opportunity to spend a semester or year learning at a college or university abroad as part of their degree programs. They often operate in conjunction with long-term degree programs at overseas institutions.
These programs often cost more than the school’s typical tuition and fees, though sometimes special scholarships are available.

Summer or short-term study abroad.

For students who want to experience learning abroad on a shorter-term basis, there are many programs that offer summer or other short-term courses. These can be coordinated through U.S. or foreign institutions, or sometimes by professional associations or community groups. They are often tied to specific areas of study, especially language, archeology, history, art, political science, and medicine.
